WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING
CP12 IRS Notice
CHANGES TO YOUR TAX RETURN, RESULTING IN AN OVERPAYMENT
Why did I receive a CP 12 IRS Notice?
The IRS sent you a CP 12 IRS Notice because they corrected one or more mistakes on your tax returns which resulted in you having an overpayment in your taxes. The overpayment can be either different from what you thought your overpayment was, or an overpayment when you thought you owed or had broken even with your taxes.
What should I do?
Carefully review the notice, and make sure that the changes the IRS made are correct and match up with your financial records, and tax returns. If you are in agreement with the changes the IRS has made to your tax return, you will receive your tax refund in 4 to 6 weeks, as long as you do not have any other outstanding tax liabilities.
Where can I find out what caused the change on my tax return?
The IRS provides a toll free number on the top right corner of your CP 12 IRS Notice for you to call regarding the specific changes, and information on your tax return.
What can I do if I disagree with the notice?
The IRS has a special toll free number on the top of your CP 12 IRS Notice which you can call, or you can write to them within 60 days of the date on the notice. To reverse any decisions or calculations made by the IRS on your tax return, you must provide the documents and additional information that substantiates your claim.
Once the IRS receives your letter with proof of a mistake, they will forward your case to be audited, where you have rights as a taxpayer to formerly appeal their decision. The Audit department will contact you within 5-6 weeks to go over the audit procedure, and your rights as a taxpayer to appeal.
If you do not contact the IRS within 60 days from the date on the notice, you will forfeit your right to appeal the decision, and the amount stated on the CP 12 IRS Notice will become the final amount you will receive.
